To undertake bone densitometry, we use a very low dose x-ray to scan the density of the bone. Bone densitometry, is a crucial procedure used to assess the strength and calcium content of bones. This helps determine the presence of osteoporosis or osteopenia. Osteopenia, if not treated, can be a precursor to osteoporosis. Lower density of bone mineral than normal is easy to treat with early detection.
Osteoporosis is a more severe condition and can lead to side effects including: back pain, bone fractures, neck pain and stooped posture. These conditions are often symptomatic of age, as bone density lowers in the later stages of life.
It is recommended that women over 65yrs and men over 70yrs have a Bone Density scan for early detection of Osteoporosis. If you are concerned that you may be at risk of these conditions, you should discuss with your doctor and they can arrange to have a bone densitometry scan performed.
Alternatively, you can approach us directly to have the scan performed. In that case, you have to pay a fee of $66 as Medicare will not allow us to bulk bill without a doctor's referral and if you don't meet the Medicare Criteria. You can discuss the results with your doctor to decide what, if any treatment is required.
